Plagiarism and falsification of data by researchers have been in the news repeatedly over recent years. The internet allows knowledge to become a mobile and easily re-packaged good. Even though deliberate academic misconduct is not representative, good scientific practice presents a series of difficult questions, and nagging problems for researchers and accidental breaches can happen.
But there are basic and helpful principles which researchers should be aware of and should be able to apply. Where this is the case, it is possible to act appropriately even in difficult situations and avoid dangerous pitfalls in the academic career.
This workshop familiarises participants with good scientific practice. It informs them about ethical and legal guidelines and uses typical issues and problems as examples to show how they can be practically implement in research.

Dr. Peter Schröder, Düsseldorf, is a biologist and IPMA-certified project manager. After working in the field of biomedical fundamen-tal research and application-oriented development he became self-employed with “brain4hire” in 2011. He has authored numerous scientific publications, has a long-standing experience in teaching science and is an experienced trainer on soft skills.

About Lukas:
Lukas was raised in a small town north of Karlsruhe, but moved to the 'big' city to study physics. He graduated from KIT with a Master's thesis about 3D transmon qubits in 2016. Afterwards he joined Prof. Dr. Ioan M. Pop's Black Forest Quantum Lab (BFQ) at KIT to continue working on superconducting quantum circuits with a focus on harnessing the kinetic inductance and intrinsic non-linearity of granular aluminum (grAl). In 2019 he defended his PhD thesis about granular aluminum superinductors. Following graduation Lukas joined the lab of Professor Leo P. Kouwenhoven at QuTech (TU Delft, Netherlands) to build on his background in cQED and add the intricacies of semiconductor-superconductor Josephson junctions into the mix. Since 2022 Lukas is part of the quantum electronics department at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig and heads the coherent superconducting quantum circuits group since 08/2022.

We’re all familiar with it: being pigeonholed. Sometimes it’s through casual, subtle remarks, other times it’s direct and hurtful, and sometimes it remains unspoken.
We also pigeonhole others ourselves when we interact with them. Since these labels influence our perception and actions, they aren’t just unconscious biases but have real consequences.
Understanding the mechanisms behind these biases and their potential effects helps us, on one hand, to scrutinize our own biases and avoid acting upon them, and on the other hand, to devise strategies for dealing with situations in which we are unfairly pigeonholed.
In this interactive workshop, participants delve deeper into the topic of unconscious bias. The focus lies on hands-on methods that bridge cognitive knowledge about unconscious assumptions with emotional aspects. Furthermore, participants work on strategies to deal with unconscious assumptions with which they themselves are labeled.
